LED Basics: What is LED pixel pitch?

We often hear about pixel pitch but many people do not fully understand the importance of pitch when discussing LED displays. The pitch is the distance between the centers of two LEDs. The lower the pitch or number, the higher the resolution. For example a 4mm distance from LED center to center is a higher resolution than a 6mm distance. Hence a 4mm screen will be more costly.

With technology changing everyday more people inquire about 2mm, 3mm screens but it is important to note that nano pitches such as 1mm, 2mm and 3mm are available for indoor screens. Indoor LED displays contain micro LED pixels that are small enough to allow for 1mm distances.

Outdoor displays should not and cannot be made in 1-3mm pitches due to LED size and brightness requirements. Outdoor screens, or indoor screens facing the window typically necessitate very bright LED diodes. These diodes are bigger in size and produce much more heat than indoor LEDs. For this reason the LEDs are at minimum 4mm apart, which results in 4mm pitch led screens.
